Memorial Day has been observed in the United States since 1971 as a way to honor those who have lost their lives while serving in the US military. This year, Memorial Day will be Monday, May 31. This three-day weekend is observed by everyone: those who have lost family members to military service as well as those who appreciate the sacrifice of those willing to accept the duty of protecting our country. Typically, Memorial Day weekend is seen as the beginning of the summer season and everything it brings: cookouts and park trips and even time in the pool! (But if you ask us, we’ll wait for the water to warm up a bit).

This Memorial Day, how will you celebrate? There are many ways. While veterans and active-duty service members have mixed feelings about being wished “happy Memorial Day” due to the somber tone of the holiday, it’s always appropriate to kick off the weekend by paying your respects at a military cemetery. Here in the Greater Kansas City area, those hoping for a moment to pause, reflect, remember, and mourn those who have fallen in the line of duty can visit the National WWI Museum and Memorial. Veterans and active-duty members of the military receive free admission!
