Fortunately, there are more lovely parks and greenspaces around Belton, MO and the general Kansas City area than you might realize! Here at the Lazy Acres senior living community in Belton, we’ve pulled together a list of some of our favorite picnicking spots for your next day at the park!
Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, KS
At 1,600 acres, there’s something in Shawnee Mission Park for everyone. At the heart of the park is the 120-acre Shawnee Mission Lake, where you can fish, swim, or rent a canoe or pedal boat. Want an unforgettable picnicking experience? Pack a lunch and eat out on the water. If you’re looking for a less-intimate picnic spot, there are also reservable shelters that can host a whole party, not to mention a 53-acre dog park, disc golf course, and trails for walking, running, or biking. Plus, Shawnee Mission Park boasts the biggest outdoor community theater in the United States!
Penn Valley Park in KCMO, south of downtown
Even if you’ve never actually been to Penn Valley Park, chances are you know where it is. This historic park, which abuts the Liberty Memorial and World War I museum, was actually one of the first parks in Kansas City! And it’s not just for history buffs. Play tennis, visit the dog park, or head to Union Station or Crown Center just across the street!
Loose Park in KCMO
You never know what’s going to happen when you’re picnicking in Loose Park! After all, Cerner Corporation was founded during a picnic right here in 1979. There’s certainly plenty to see in this historic park, which was the site of much of the Battle of Westport and is now home to several memorials and historic markers. Kansas City’s famous Rose Garden is here, along with duck ponds, walking trails, and a Japanese Tea Room and Garden, a cultural exchange with KC’s sister city of Kurashiki, Japan.
Swope Park in KCMO
At more than 1,800 acres, there’s plenty of green grass where you can set up your picnic in Kansas City’s largest park. While the Kansas City Zoo is probably the biggest attraction in Swope Park, there’s plenty more to see and do, including the Starlight Theater, the Swope Memorial Golf Course, the Swope Soccer Village complex, the Lakeside Nature Center, a swimming pool, and lots more. History buffs may enjoy the Battle of Westport Museum & Visitor Center while science fiction fans will be intrigued to learn that Robert A. Heinlein, who grew up in the Kansas City area, wrote about the park in several of his stories.
Heritage Park in Olathe, KS
Home to a lake, a golf course, an off-leash dog park, and outdoor exercise equipment, as well as football and softball complexes, Heritage Park in Olathe has it all! With more than 1,200 acres and ten reservable shelters, there are plenty of places to have your next picnic. Just plan to do some serious walking if you want to see everything!
