alexraths Hot Tips for a Cold FebruaryFebruary has a bad reputation for being one of the coldest and snowiest months of the year—not to mention the shortest and most often misspelled! But there’s a lot to celebrate in February if you know where to look. The Super Bowl and Groundhog Day are both already behind us, but the Lazy Acres senior living community in Belton can help you find something to do today or tonight or this weekend instead of hibernating until spring begins!

February is National Library Lover’s Month, which makes it a perfect time to visit and enjoy your local library and maybe consider volunteering some of your time there, too. Here in Belton we have the great Cass County Public Library Northern Resource Center, but we’re also just a short drive from the main branch of the Kansas City Public Library, which has all sorts of special events in February and all year long!

Besides that, February is also National Cherry Month. It’s a great month to bake, since it’s so cold outside, so maybe dust off that cherry pie recipe and bake one or two for family and friends! It’s also a great month to do some chocolate tasting, maybe at some of the fine local chocolatiers in the Kansas City area, such as Panache Chocolatier & Café or Christopher Elbow Chocolates. It’s National Grapefruit Month too, but you probably don’t have a grapefruit pie recipe, and that might be for the best.

While you’re thinking food, don’t forget your feathered friends outside. February is also National Wild Bird Feeding Month, which is a good reminder to refill your birdfeeders or put out some seed mix. It’s also the perfect month to binge a bunch of movies or your favorite show on Netflix (or settle in to watch the Grammy Awards or the Oscars, both of which are this month) and eat delicious snacks—not just because it’s cold outside, but also because it’s National Snack Food Month. Of course, it’s also American Heart Month, so remember to snack in moderation and try to get outside for a little exercise when the temperatures aren’t too low.

Whether you’re writing it to your local library or to your sweetheart, February is the perfect month to write a love letter, especially with Valentine’s Day coming up and all. And while Valentine’s Day gets all the press, Presidents’ Day is in February, too. If you’re looking for a road trip, you could always visit the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri or the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum at his boyhood home in Abilene, Kansas.

Sure, February is a short month, but that’s all the more reason to get in as much activity as you can during the short, cold days and long, colder nights. And don’t forget that the first day of spring is just around the corner on March 20, and it’ll be here before you know it!
