June can be an incredibly fun month here in Belton, MO. It’s part spring and part summer, with days that are wonderfully cool and days that are sunny and warm. We still get rainstorms, but we also get lots of sunshine. The pools are open, the grandkids are out of school, and, of course, June is one of the most popular months of the year for weddings.
That means there’s a lot to do in and around Belton, but if you’re looking for something to add to your calendar, June is also a month full of unique celebrations and observances. Here at the Lazy Acres over 55 community in Belton, we’ve compiled a list of a few of our favorites, along with suggestions for how you can incorporate them into your week and maybe even involve a few of your neighbors…
June 6 was National Donut Day. It may already be in the past, but that just means you have some catching up to do. After all, any day is Donut Day if you try hard enough!
June 10 is National Herbs and Spices Day, which means it’s a good day to get out in the garden and plant a little parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, or whatever other herbs and spices are your favorites. It’s also National Iced Tea Day, so while you’re out in the garden, you can enjoy a refreshing glass of cool iced tea, or put out that jar of sun tea to catch a few rays.
June 12 is a perfect day to take a walk in the Overland Park Arboretum. Why is that? Because it’s National Red Rose Day. This also makes it a great day to send flowers to someone you care about, just to let them know that you’re thinking of them.
On June 13, we celebrate National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day. So, if you know someone who just isn’t very handy in the kitchen, this is a great day to take them a casserole.
June 18 is Sushi Day. If you’re a lover of sushi, you’re in luck, because the Kansas City area has some fantastic sushi restaurants. Never tried sushi? It’s never too late! Today may be the perfect day to pick up the chopsticks and give it a go. You don’t even have to pick up the tab yourself. Since today is also Father’s Day, why not let the kids take you out for some sushi to celebrate?
“Shaken, not stirred.” June 19 is National Martini Day, and what better time to break out the martini glasses and watch your favorite James Bond film with a neighbor?
If martinis aren’t your thing, you can always wait around for June 20, which is National Ice Cream Soda Day. Enjoy the day with a tall, cool ice cream soda that you make yourself, or take a friend out to an ice cream parlor and let the pros do it for you.
June 21 is the Summer Solstice this year, meaning that we’ll get the longest period of daylight all year. This makes it a perfect day to hit the pool or go out for a drive. The Summer Solstice is also a good reminder that there are only about 200 shopping days left until Christmas, so it’s time to start making that list and checking it twice!
