Everyone loves the idea of an out-of-state vacation—maybe a trip someplace exotic or exciting like the tropics or the south of France—but many times those big vacations don’t turn out to be as fun or as relaxing as they were in our heads. After all, planning a vacation can be a lot of work, especially if you have a bunch of family members or friends vacationing with you. They can also be costly. And while we all love the thought of getting away from it all, the actual facts of travel aren’t always as pleasant: rushing through airports, packing onto crowded planes, waiting at layovers, and so on.
What if you could enjoy all those out-of-town vacation experiences that you crave right here in Kansas City? What if you could enjoy rich and rewarding leisure and cultural activities while sleeping every night in your own bed? You’d have no travel costs and no crowded planes, just experiences that you’ll treasure. The staycation you’ve been waiting for is available, and you can get it within just a short drive of the Lazy Acres senior living community in Belton!
When we plan a vacation someplace far away, we make lists of all the theaters and restaurants, golf courses and beaches, museums and art galleries that we want to visit. But we often neglect those things when they’re right in our own back yard. Kansas City has all the attractions that you might go to on an out-of-town vacation. Why not take a few days off and see how many you can enjoy without once setting foot in an airport?
Theater and Performing Arts in Kansas City
Kansas City may be famous for barbecue and jazz, but the place is actually lousy with great theater, opera, ballet, and concert venues to serve just about every taste. You’ll have no problem finding that Broadway show experience you’re seeking at Starlight Theatre, The Folly, The Coterie, The KC Rep, the Music Hall, and more. Then there are also concert venues such as the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts (home to the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera, and the Kansas City Ballet) not to mention the Midland, the Truman, and many others.
Public Golf Courses
Why putter around the house during your summer vacation when you can putt to your heart’s content at any of the great public golf courses in the metro area? KC has a course for every golfer, from the Stone Canyon Golf Club (designed by Greg Norman) to the nine-hole Falcon Valley Golf Course with its fast greens, blind shots, and low green fees.
Kansas City Area Beaches!
Believe it or not, we even have beaches here in Kansas City! You don’t have to go all the way to the Ozarks to get a little sand between your toes. Just head down to Shawnee Mission Park Beach, Longview Lake, Blue Springs Lake, or Kill Creek Park Beach & Marina. You’ll want to be aware, however, that most are only open until the school year starts, so grab your beach towel while you can!
Museums and Art Galleries
Kansas City has some of the best museums and art galleries in the country. Maybe you’ve already been to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art or the World War I Museum at the Liberty Memorial, so use your staycation to see something you’ve never seen before. Check out the Steamboat Arabia Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, or the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium at Union Station!
Food, Glorious Food
Our town has a lot more than barbecue, though, of course, we have that, too! There are pizza places to rival those you’d find in New York, fine dining, and cuisine from all over the globe. French food, Lebanese, Turkish, Cantonese: We have it all. Just Google your favorite type of food or try something new and unique.
