Sure, Kansas City may be most famous for jazz and barbecue, Royals baseball, the Kansas City Chiefs, and, of course, craft beer, but the Kansas City area is a place of many facets, and these days we’re also becoming better and better known for our amazing local ice cream!
For those who aren’t lactose intolerant, ice cream is a beloved summertime treat. And for those who are lactose intolerant, dairy-free options are becoming more plentiful! It’s practically a ritual to go down to the local ice cream shop when the weather starts to heat up, smell that unmistakable waffle cone smell, and peer through the glass at all the flavors. Almost takes you back to your childhood, doesn’t it?
Originally called “cream ice,” this dessert was introduced to the French court of Henry II in 1553 but didn’t become a staple of public consumption until almost the 17th century. Since then, ice cream has found its way from the tables of kings to the fairgrounds and ice cream parlors of America, where it has become a summertime tradition.
There are lots of great local ice cream shops to choose from in the Kansas City area. You can—and should—feel free to sample them all, but here are a few of our favorites:
Betty Rae’s Ice Cream at 7140 Wornall Rd in Kansas City, MO 64114
A Waldo sensation, Betty Rae’s Ice Cream may be a fairly new addition to the Kansas City ice cream landscape, but it has already made a big impression. The Pitch named Betty Rae’s the Best Ice Cream in Kansas City in 2017, and it’s featured as one of Bloomberg’s Best Ice Cream Shops in America.
Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard at 6235 Brookside Plaza in Kansas City, MO 64113
What is frozen custard? It’s a dessert like ice cream, but it’s usually made with eggs. At Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard, a Kansas City institution since 1988, frozen custard is also a delicious work of edible art. With locations in Brookside and Leawood, Foo’s is a part of Kansas City history.
Glacé Artisan Ice Cream on the Country Club Plaza, 4960 Main St. in Kansas City, MO 64112
Created by renowned Kansas City chocolatier Christopher Elbow, Glacé Artisan Ice Cream on the Country Club Plaza specializes in small-batch ice creams in ever-changing flavors to provide an exciting—and satisfying—ice cream experience every time!
