You know how the song goes: it’s “summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” That’s certainly true here at the Lazy Acres senior living community in Belton. While we may technically still be in the midst of spring, you wouldn’t know it by stepping outside. The weather is as likely to feel like mid-June as mid-May, and while summer doesn’t officially start until about the third week of June, the warm weather has all of us thinking summertime thoughts.
There’s a lot to do in the Kansas City area this summer. You can take in First Fridays at the Crossroads in June and July, attend one of the area’s annual art fairs, catch a show at the Starlight, or chow down at one of our many local barbecue battles. That’s not even taking into account baseball season at the K, walks in the park, a trip to the zoo with the grandkids, or any of the other myriad outdoor activities that call the KC area home. But while summertime livin’ may indeed be easy at our Belton senior living community, it’s still a good idea to play it safe when you go out to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of the summer.
We had an unusually warm winter here in Belton, which probably means that we’re in for a scorcher of a summer. That doesn’t mean that you can’t still get out and enjoy all that Kansas City has to offer, but it does make it extra important that you go prepared. Maybe the first thing to do is talk to your doctor. Some medications are affected by higher temperatures, so you may want to know what to expect as the warm summer months set in. And those who suffer from seasonal allergies should probably be ready for a summer with a high pollen count.
Whatever other instructions you get from your doctor, it’s always a good idea for anyone who is going out to enjoy some summer fun to prepare for the heat. Heatstroke is a very real danger, so it’s important to stay hydrated and to bring snacks along to help you refuel. And of course, protect yourself by always taking sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat if you’re going to be in the sun. Finally, don’t forget your cell phone so that in the event of a summertime emergency help is just a phone call away!
That aforementioned warm winter also means that we’re probably in for a more-than-usually buggy summer, so be sure you pack along some bug spray. Here in the Midwest, we’ve always got our fair share of mosquitos and other biting insects, so bug spray is essential even during a normal summer. And then there are the notorious oak mites: microscopic mites that infest oak trees specifically, and leave a particularly itchy red spot when they bite. Unfortunately, they aren’t repelled by bug spray, so you might want to be careful strolling under oak trees in the late summer.
Whatever your plans are for this summer, stay cool, stay in touch, and help keep an eye on your friends and neighbors. And above all, have a great time.
